The original building underwent several modifications over the years and required a major redesign to meet code and zoning compliance. The reimagined structure is a tribute to Connecticut’s vernacular style, and the choice of exterior materials meets the expectations of the town’s historic district preferences. The floor plan design incorporates programmatic flexibility, allowing each guest-room floor to be rented individually or as one entire country retreat. The project was well-received by the local community, planning and zoning board, and the HDC during the design review and application process. 9 Academy is an excellent example of how small-scale boutique hospitality development can fit in within small town master planning, contributing to the town’s economic success.
